See who may contact youWhat to know before you compare
- You can browse Show my rates research without an account; contact information is requested near the end of the quote form.
- Company-research logos do not identify quote partners or guarantee that an insurer is available for a specific driver.
- A useful comparison keeps drivers, vehicles, limits, deductibles, effective date and payment schedule consistent.
A car insurance comparison has two separate parts: researching the market and requesting a personalized price. You can use the Show my rates research library without an account. A quote request begins only when you choose to enter the step-by-step form.
This guide explains what the form collects, when contact information is requested, what company logos mean on this site and what to check when a licensed partner responds.
How it works
Keep research, request and policy records separate
Each stage answers a different question. A company profile is not a personal match, a response is not an issued policy and a low installment is not the full-term cost.
Before you request
Build one comparison design
Choose the drivers, vehicles, limits, deductibles and effective date you will ask every responding company to use.
When you send it
Read the consent first
You will see how we use your contact details, plus links to our privacy notice, terms, and who may reach out.
After a response
Verify the written proposal
Check the underwriting company, covered drivers and vehicles, policy term, coverage lines and conditions before comparing price.
What a car insurance quote represents
A quote applies a company's current pricing and eligibility rules to the information supplied about a driver, household, vehicle and policy. It is not the same as an issued policy. Before coverage begins, an insurer may verify information and update the price or eligibility when the verified record differs from the application.
Accuracy matters more than speed. Use the true garaging address, include the drivers the application asks for and identify the exact vehicle. If you are comparing companies, keep the requested limits and deductibles consistent.
Consumer reference: the National Association of Insurance Commissioners' Consumer's Guide to Auto Insurance explains common policy information, rating factors and the need to compare coverage as well as price.
How a Show my rates quote request works
- Start with the garaging ZIP. The ZIP helps determine which state rules and partner service areas may apply.
- Build the insurance profile. The form asks about vehicles, drivers, current coverage and driving history. The time varies with the number of drivers and vehicles included.
- Add your contact details. Name, address, email, and phone come near the end. Before you send the request, you will see the consent language and links to our privacy policy, terms, and who may contact you.
- A licensed partner may follow up. If someone on our partner list can help with your location and profile, they may reach out. Sending a request does not guarantee a partner or insurer will be available.
You can leave and come back without giving us your name or contact details. Until you send the request, we only keep a limited progress snapshot — not your name, date of birth, street address, email, phone, or driving incidents. Your full profile goes out only after you review the consent. See the Privacy Policy for the full data notice.
Company research and quote partners are different
Show my rates publishes independent profiles of recognized insurance companies. Those pages help you research distribution models, programs and public company facts. A logo in that library is not a statement that the company buys leads from Show my rates or will quote a particular request.

How to compare the responses
Begin with the policy details, not the monthly payment. Confirm that every response lists the same drivers and vehicles. Match liability limits, uninsured-motorist selections, collision and comprehensive deductibles, rental coverage and the intended effective date.
Compare the total cost for the full policy term, including installment fees and any discount conditions. If one proposal assumes autopay, telematics enrollment or a bundle, make sure that condition is practical for the household. A lower price paired with lower limits or a higher deductible is a different policy design.
Preserve the record from request to issued policy
Keep the version trail instead of replacing one document with the next. The request records what you supplied, the proposal records what was offered at that point and the application or issued policy records what the insurer ultimately accepted. Differences between those stages should be resolved before payment or cancellation of existing coverage.

| Record | What to verify | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Your comparison profile | Drivers, vehicles, garaging address, requested limits, deductibles and effective date. | That every responding party received or interpreted the information identically. |
| Written proposal | Underwriting company, policy term, coverage lines, total premium, fees and discount conditions. | That a monthly amount includes the same product or the full-term cost. |
| Application | Answers carried forward, authorization language and any changes from the proposal. | That the proposal automatically became the application without revision. |
| Declarations and policy | Named insured, covered vehicles, limits, deductibles, forms and effective dates. | That an earlier quote controls a later claim or coverage dispute. |
If a proposal changes after verification, ask for the reason and a revised written version. If you are replacing a policy, verify the new effective time and the old cancellation time with both parties before making the change; do not assume the times align.
What happens if no partner is available
Partner service areas and eligibility can change. If no partner can help, the request remains free and there is no obligation to purchase. You can still use the state guide, company library, vehicle research and coverage worksheet to prepare a consistent set of questions for a licensed agent or insurer outside the Show my rates partner network.
Start with the coverage-types guide, use the coverage worksheet, copy returned proposals into the interactive quote comparison worksheet, or begin a quote request when you are ready.
