Comparison overview
GEICO and Progressive are structured very differently: a Berkshire-owned direct seller versus a dual-channel insurer with non-standard roots. What that means for Florida drivers—and why your equal-terms quotes settle price, not the org chart.

Two giants, two structures
GEICO remains predominantly direct, with most business handled online or by phone, and is backed by Berkshire Hathaway’s balance sheet and an A++ (Superior) AM Best rating. Progressive runs two established doors: direct sales and a broad independent-agency channel.
The practical difference is the breadth of the agent channel. A Progressive independent agent may quote other carriers alongside it and re-shop a renewal. A local GEICO office represents GEICO, and most independent agencies still cannot include GEICO in a multi-carrier shop. Confirm what is available for your ZIP when you request proposals.
Which kinds of drivers each structure tends to fit
These are structural tendencies, not price verdicts and not personal recommendations:
- GEICO often fits drivers comfortable managing insurance in an app, with fairly standard profiles, who do not need a multi-carrier agent shop.
- Progressive often fits drivers who want an independent-agent option, or who need a company with a long-standing filing / non-standard appetite.
Both quote across the spectrum. The company whose underwriting likes your profile this year is the one that comes back lower on an equal-terms request—not the one with the flashier org chart.
Florida backdrop (shared legal floor)
For most private vehicles with four or more wheels, FLHSMV (opens in a new tab) describes $10,000 PIP and $10,000 property-damage liability as the registration baseline. Bodily-injury financial-responsibility rules apply in specified circumstances. After a qualifying DUI-related conviction, Florida Statutes §324.023 requires higher 100/300/50 liability limits (the FR-44 context)—see FR-44 insurance Florida. For other proof filings, see SR-22 insurance Florida.
In March 2026, Florida regulators reported that the five largest auto-insurance groups were indicating an average rate change of about −8%. That market-level figure was not an approved or guaranteed savings amount for every driver (DFS press materials (opens in a new tab)). Compare prices only on equal terms
Structure explains service and appetite. Price only becomes meaningful after the proposals match.
Use the quote comparison worksheet and hold these constant:
| Hold equal | Why |
|---|---|
| Drivers and household disclosures | Missing drivers invent a fake “win.” |
| Vehicles, VIN, use, mileage, garaging address | Florida territory and use change rating. |
| Liability limits, PIP selections, UM/UIM, collision/comprehensive, deductibles | A lower price with less protection is a different product. |
| Policy term and effective date | Compare full term premium, not a monthly teaser. |
| Payment conditions | Autopay, telematics enrollment, bundle, verification — record what the price requires. |
Then rank by full policy-term premium (and disclosed fees), not by first payment alone. For due-now vs term cost, see no-down-payment Florida. For reading sample rates without treating them as your quote, see average cost of car insurance in Florida. For an equal-terms shopping process (not a carrier crown), see cheapest car insurance in Florida.
