Florida financial responsibility

The correct starting point
An SR-22 is not a statewide insurance package with one sticker price. In Florida materials, it is a filing—proof connected to a financial-responsibility requirement. The useful shopping record is the Florida notice or license record that names the filing, the coverage limits, and the dates attached to your case.
ShowMyRates is an independent comparison service, not an insurer, agency, or advisor. This page explains how to read the state requirement first, then compare written proposals on equal terms. It does not recommend a company, promise a premium, or tell you which filing “you should” buy.
Copy the state record into a simple worksheet before you talk to any producer. If an agent or insurer proposes something different from the notice, ask for the reason in writing before relying on it.
Proof, not a coverage SKU
FLHSMV describes an SR-22 as an insurance filing that certifies bodily injury liability (BIL) and property damage liability (PDL) to comply with reinstatement requirements under Florida’s financial-responsibility law. That definition matters for shopping language:
“Cheap SR-22 Florida” is a secondary search phrase only—not a promise. A lower first payment is not the same as a lower policy cost. Lock the filing terms first, then compare full written proposals.
For educational contrast, see SR-22 vs FR-44 in Florida. This money page owns the SR-22 filing + quote-request workflow; the FR-44 money page owns the DUI-related higher-limits statute.
Notice audit
Copy the state record into a simple worksheet. If an agent or insurer proposes something different, ask for the reason in writing before relying on it. Only after those five fields are stable should you compare prices.
| Record | What to copy | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Filing named | SR-22, FR-44, or another proof requirement | Prevents a request for the wrong filing |
| Required limits | Each bodily-injury and property-damage amount | Keeps every proposal on the same legal floor |
| Effective date | The date proof must begin | Helps avoid coverage with the wrong start date |
| Release / compliance date | Any end or review date shown by FLHSMV, if available | Ties cancel/reduce decisions to the state record |
| Vehicle status | Owned vehicle, regular access, or no vehicle | Lets a licensed producer evaluate the correct policy form |
Florida Statutes §324.021 defines proof of financial responsibility as $10,000 BI to one person, $20,000 BI to two or more in one crash, and $10,000 property damage in one crash. That definition is useful context. It does not replace an individual notice. DUI-related higher limits are addressed separately in §324.023.
Registration
FLHSMV states that before you register a vehicle with at least four wheels, you must show proof of PIP and PDL. FLHSMV notes PIP covers 80 percent of necessary and reasonable medical expenses up to $10,000 from a covered injury (subject to the policy). Failure to maintain required insurance may suspend driving privilege and license plate for up to three years, with a reinstatement fee of up to $500.
Review Florida requirements →Filing
When a notice requires an SR-22, the shopping floor is the filing name, limits, and dates on that notice, not a generic “Florida minimum” label. §324.021 also describes a motor vehicle liability policy used as proof as an owner’s or operator’s policy. Meeting registration PIP/PDL alone does not automatically satisfy an SR-22 filing.
Read Florida Statutes §324.021 ↗Wrong-filing risk
If the notice names FR-44, stop shopping it as a standard SR-22. Section 324.023 covers the DUI-related cases it describes and requires $100,000 / $300,000 / $50,000 for a minimum of three years.

Proposal ledger
A filing is attached to a policy (or another method the law allows). Request a written proposal and record the same six items for every company. Do not rank companies on the first payment alone. There is no official statewide SR-22 premium average that prices your household.
Use the quote comparison worksheet →Effective and expiration dates
Liability limits plus every selected option
Premium for the full quoted term
Premium, taxes, and fees due before coverage begins

Vehicle status
If you do not own a vehicle, say so clearly. Also disclose whether you regularly use a household, employer, rental, or borrowed vehicle. Those facts can affect whether an operator policy form is available and whether it fits the actual driving situation.
Ask the licensed insurer to confirm in writing that the proposed policy supports the SR-22 filing required by the notice. Do not rely only on a product label such as “non-owner,” and do not assume a policy makes every borrowed or regularly available vehicle a covered auto.
Before changing policies
Do not rely on a sales confirmation alone when a state filing is involved. Before ending existing coverage, confirm the replacement effective date, filing instructions, the name on the proof, and status shown by FLHSMV. Keep the written proposal, declarations page, payment receipt, and filing confirmation together. Near the expected release date, ask FLHSMV whether the requirement has been satisfied. An insurer can explain its process; the state record controls.
After the filing is confirmed
After filing name and limits are locked, use city worksheets for input context—not price ranks: Miami · Tampa · Orlando · Jacksonville · Hialeah. Statewide orientation: Florida hub.
