Maine mandates one of the largest insurance packages of any state, and pays less for it than almost any other state. The minimum policy under 29-A M.R.S. §1605 is 50/100/25: $50,000 bodily injury per person, $100,000 per accident, and $25,000 property damage, bodily injury floors matched only by Alaska and, since July 2025, North Carolina, and double or more the minimums common elsewhere. Every policy must also include $2,000 of medical payments coverage and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of at least 50/100.
Yet the NAIC's 2022 figures put Maine's average annual expenditure at $758, near the bottom nationally. Rural roads, low traffic density and low claim litigation keep costs down, proving that high mandatory limits and low premiums can coexist. Carriers still price the same Maine driver differently, though, and on a small premium base even modest percentage gaps are worth capturing by comparing quotes.
The figures below explain the policy structure used in Maine. They do not predict an individual premium. For a broader view of how state rules differ, use our national car insurance directory.
Maine minimum car insurance requirements
Most quotes begin with liability coverage. Bodily injury liability addresses covered injury claims made by other people when you cause a crash. Property damage liability addresses covered damage to their vehicles or other property. The legal minimum keeps a policy compliant, but it does not say how much financial risk a household can comfortably retain.

What the state minimum covers, and what it leaves with you
A minimum policy is designed to satisfy state law. It is not designed around the value of your car, the size of a possible injury claim or the amount of savings you want to protect. Those are household decisions, so they need a separate review.
A financed or leased vehicle commonly needs collision and comprehensive coverage under the contract even when state law does not require them. For plain-language definitions and buying context, visit our insurance guides before selecting limits.

State law is only the starting point. These Maine-specific details show what to confirm before you compare coverage or buy a policy.
What a minimum Maine policy actually includes
A legal Maine policy is a three-part package, and none of the parts is optional:
Maine is an at-fault state, the driver who causes a crash is responsible for the damage, but the mandatory package means even a minimum-coverage Maine driver carries protection that would count as a mid-tier policy in much of the country.
- Liability coverage of 50/100/25, 50/100 bodily injury minimums matched only by Alaska and, since July 2025, North Carolina
- $2,000 in medical payments coverage, which pays your own and your passengers' immediate medical bills regardless of fault
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage of at least 50/100, protecting you when the at-fault driver carries too little insurance or none at all
Why mandatory UM/UIM matters
Under 24-A M.R.S. §2902, no auto policy may be issued in Maine without uninsured motorist coverage, and Maine's definition explicitly includes underinsured and hit-and-run vehicles. The coverage must match your bodily injury liability limits unless you select lower, and it can never drop below the 50/100 state minimum.
Maine's uninsured-driver rate is among the lowest in the country, but the risk never reaches zero, nationally, 15.4% of drivers were uninsured in 2023 (Insurance Research Council), and out-of-state traffic doesn't carry Maine limits. Because every carrier must sell the same UM/UIM floor, the difference between them is purely price, an unusually clean comparison-shopping problem.
SR-22 filings in Maine
Maine uses SR-22 certificates, but more sparingly than most states. A first OUI suspension generally does not require one; the Bureau of Motor Vehicles requires an SR-22 as a condition of reinstatement for second and subsequent offenses, typically maintained for three years. Insurers file electronically with the BMV, and a cancellation triggers an SR-26 notice to the state, so a lapse surfaces quickly. Drivers who need a filing face the widest premium spreads between carriers, which makes comparing quotes most valuable exactly then.

Average annual expenditure for auto insurance in Maine was $758 in 2022, among the lowest of any state. This is a historical statewide expenditure benchmark from NAIC 2022 Auto Insurance Database Average Premium Supplement (June 2024). It combines many types of drivers and policies, so it should be used for market context rather than as a current quote estimate.
Insurers apply their filed rating plans to the household in front of them. Two neighbors can see different prices, and the same household can receive a wide range from different companies because each insurer weighs the inputs differently.
Garaging location
Claim frequency, traffic, repair costs, theft and weather exposure vary across Maine ZIP codes.
Drivers and record
Age, driving experience, citations, accidents, claims and continuous insurance history can affect price and eligibility.
Vehicle and use
Repair technology, vehicle value, annual mileage, commute and business use change the potential cost of a claim.
Coverage choices
Liability limits, collision, comprehensive, optional benefits and deductibles determine what the policy is being asked to pay.
Household details
Other licensed drivers, additional vehicles and bundling opportunities can change the account-level price.
Company fit
Insurers target different customer profiles. No one company is consistently cheapest for every driver in every territory.
