Alabama has required liability insurance only since June 1, 2000, later than most states, but it now enforces the mandate as firmly as anywhere, with electronic verification tied directly to your vehicle registration. The minimums are 25/50/25: $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, $50,000 per accident, and $25,000 for property damage, set by the Mandatory Liability Insurance law (Ala. Code §32-7A-4).
Alabama is an at-fault state, so there is no PIP requirement: the driver who causes a crash pays for the other side's injuries and damage through liability coverage. That makes your liability limits, and what different carriers charge for the same limits, the core of any Alabama policy comparison.
The figures below explain the policy structure used in Alabama. They do not predict an individual premium. For a broader view of how state rules differ, use our national car insurance directory.
Alabama minimum car insurance requirements
Most quotes begin with liability coverage. Bodily injury liability addresses covered injury claims made by other people when you cause a crash. Property damage liability addresses covered damage to their vehicles or other property. The legal minimum keeps a policy compliant, but it does not say how much financial risk a household can comfortably retain.

What the state minimum covers, and what it leaves with you
A minimum policy is designed to satisfy state law. It is not designed around the value of your car, the size of a possible injury claim or the amount of savings you want to protect. Those are household decisions, so they need a separate review.
A financed or leased vehicle commonly needs collision and comprehensive coverage under the contract even when state law does not require them. For plain-language definitions and buying context, visit our insurance guides before selecting limits.
Rules and risks that matter in Alabama
State law is only the starting point. These Alabama-specific details show what to confirm before you compare coverage or buy a policy.
How Alabama enforces the insurance mandate
Alabama checks coverage electronically against insurer records rather than waiting for a traffic stop. When the state can't match a registration to an active policy, the Department of Revenue suspends the vehicle registration, and getting it back costs a $200 reinstatement fee for a first violation and $400 for any violation after that, plus proof of current coverage.
That enforcement structure means even a short lapse between policies can turn into a suspended registration without a police officer ever being involved. When you switch carriers, the start date of the new policy matters as much as the premium: the new coverage should begin the day the old one ends.
What 25/50/25 covers, and what it doesn't
The minimums are a legal floor, not a target. A multi-vehicle crash on I-65 can exhaust $25,000 of property damage coverage quickly, and hospital bills for one seriously injured person can pass $25,000 well before discharge. Anything above your limits is your responsibility.
Optional coverages, uninsured motorist, medical payments, collision, ride on top of the required liability policy. Nationally, 15.4% of drivers were uninsured in 2023 (Insurance Research Council), which is why many Alabama drivers price uninsured motorist coverage alongside their liability limits when they compare quotes.
SR-22s in Alabama
Alabama uses SR-22 certificates of financial responsibility, filed by your insurer with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) under the state's Motor Vehicle Safety Responsibility Act. Filings follow DUI convictions, driving-while-suspended offenses, and accidents or lapses while uninsured, and generally must stay in place for three years.
The SR-22 itself is inexpensive paperwork; the violation behind it is what moves the premium. Carriers weight the same driving record very differently, so drivers who need a filing tend to see the widest spread between quotes, which makes comparing several carriers worth the most for exactly this group.

Average annual expenditure for auto insurance in Alabama was $965 in 2022. This is a historical statewide expenditure benchmark from NAIC 2022 Auto Insurance Database Average Premium Supplement (June 2024). It combines many types of drivers and policies, so it should be used for market context rather than as a current quote estimate.
Insurers apply their filed rating plans to the household in front of them. Two neighbors can see different prices, and the same household can receive a wide range from different companies because each insurer weighs the inputs differently.
Garaging location
Claim frequency, traffic, repair costs, theft and weather exposure vary across Alabama ZIP codes.
Drivers and record
Age, driving experience, citations, accidents, claims and continuous insurance history can affect price and eligibility.
Vehicle and use
Repair technology, vehicle value, annual mileage, commute and business use change the potential cost of a claim.
Coverage choices
Liability limits, collision, comprehensive, optional benefits and deductibles determine what the policy is being asked to pay.
Household details
Other licensed drivers, additional vehicles and bundling opportunities can change the account-level price.
Company fit
Insurers target different customer profiles. No one company is consistently cheapest for every driver in every territory.
